It's what dreams are made of and nightmares kindled: Most home owners aspire to it; some take a few tentative steps and fewer still are crazy enough to go the full hog! This blog shares some of the trials and tribulations of a major redevelopment of a 1950s home through a cataclysmic transformation which retains the best of the last Century while metamorposing the property into a design classic fit for today's living.

Smoooooth!

We're on track to make it onto the shortlist of sites for Olympic mud wrestling! On the back of the last two days' rain, the site has yet again turned into the biggest quagmire north of London, so we're crossing our fingers for a few days of sunshine. The team is pretty drenched and the whole process has, yet again, been slowed down. According to the schedule, the stainless steel roof covering is due to be fitted next week, however, in the absence of walls and a roof structure, it's hard to see how this programme can be delivered.

Inside, the lovely Artex textured kitchen ceiling, interspersed with cracks in all directions, has been given two coats of "Swedish polymer spray-on plaster". The stuff sounds like some miracle anti-wrinkle cure and, unusually, it appears to do the trick. The good news is that it's much thinner and flexible than ordinary plaster and quicker to apply. It's also a less messy and costly option than taking down and reinstating the entire ceiling, including the art-deco style cornice. There's another coat going on tomorrow, which should leave it smooth as a collagen filled pair of body parts. Have a pick!
