It's what dreams are made of and nightmares kindled: Most home owners aspire to it; some take a few tentative steps and fewer still are crazy enough to go the full hog! This blog shares some of the trials and tribulations of a major redevelopment of a 1950s home through a cataclysmic transformation which retains the best of the last Century while metamorposing the property into a design classic fit for today's living.

Let there be light...

... and lots of it. At the last count, we're installing around 70 individual light fittings, down from 90+ a few weeks ago. With the contractor supplying 20+ recessed ceiling downlighters, the rest is down to us. I've lost count on the time spent searching for the "right" light fittings, but it certainly isn't far off 100+ hours. It has been a massive task and a huge source of frustration ensuring each individual light fitting is appropriate for each room. Altogether we've ended up with a very contemporary range of fittings, each with their own character and "fit". For example, we've forced the old lounge - now the kitchen - into 2006 by using two linear suspended architectural 2x2 aluminium frame fittings, adding to the three cylindrical stainless steel up/down wall lights, to cast light onto the cornice/ceiling and the lower half of the wall. The favourite light fitting so far is, probably, the stainless steel up & downlighter complete with a corrugated reflective shield, destined for the area outside the utility door area.
