It's what dreams are made of and nightmares kindled: Most home owners aspire to it; some take a few tentative steps and fewer still are crazy enough to go the full hog! This blog shares some of the trials and tribulations of a major redevelopment of a 1950s home through a cataclysmic transformation which retains the best of the last Century while metamorposing the property into a design classic fit for today's living.

Drains 'R Us

And they dug and dug... Hadn't really given much thought to this but the drains have to drain - the right way. Therefore, it's pretty important that you get a gentle slope from where the pipe exists the house to the mains sewer. The problem is, as the plot is on the "wrong" kind of slope, you end up digging deeper and deeper the closer you get to the road. From a gentle drop of 100 centimetres, the new drains ditch ends up at roughly 250 cms. That's pretty deep and they're having to place large sheets of plywood against the sides of the trench to ensure it doesn't all cave in. It's the first time I've seen the guys wearing hard hats, so it must be serious! Despite this, the new PVC pipes have been delivered and should be in the ground early next week. Hopefully, by then, the smell of hydraulic oil from the hard-pressed JCB digger will have cleared.
