It's what dreams are made of and nightmares kindled: Most home owners aspire to it; some take a few tentative steps and fewer still are crazy enough to go the full hog! This blog shares some of the trials and tribulations of a major redevelopment of a 1950s home through a cataclysmic transformation which retains the best of the last Century while metamorposing the property into a design classic fit for today's living.

Quality control

Now, I'm not construction pro but am able to spot a squint tile without too much difficulty. Perhaps that explains why I've had to condemn the same column of tiles two days in a row? The good news is that the tiler is coming around to my thinking, in other words, to get the tiles lined-up and at the correct level. Shouldn't be that difficult but it's proving a major challenge...

And talking about levels, how did the plumber get away with installing a shower tray which is draining the wrong way? I'm sure it makes sense to have a the tray slightly off level, but draining away from the plughole has never been a good idea. The result? Another piece of condemned work and one where the plumber had to spend two hours putting it right. It's a good thing we're picking these issues up before the en-suite has been fully tiled and fitted-out. It would just have been so much easier if they put in some kind of quality control in place and left me to worry about earning the money to pay for the stuff, rather than juggling the two jobs at the same time.
